What is PCB design?

PCB design, short for Printed Circuit Board design, is the process of creating the physical layout and electrical connections for a circuit board that electronically supports and connects components in electronic devices. It involves both schematic design (the logical representation of the circuit) and layout design (the physical placement of components and routing of electrical traces).

Key Steps in PCB Design:
  1. Schematic Capture - Engineers create a schematic diagram using EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools like Altium, KiCad, or Eagle. This diagram shows how components (resistors, capacitors, ICs, etc.) are electrically connected.
  2. Component Selection - Choose real-world parts that match the schematic symbols and meet electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements.
  3. PCB Layout - Place components on the board. Route copper traces to connect pins according to the schematic. Consider signal integrity, power delivery, electromagnetic interference (EMI), and thermal management.
  4. Design Rule Check (DRC) - Automated checks ensure the design meets manufacturing and electrical rules (e.g., trace width, spacing, via sizes).
  5. Gerber File Generation - Once the design is finalized, Gerber files (industry-standard PCB fabrication files) are generated and sent to a manufacturer.
  6. Prototyping and Testing - The fabricated PCB is assembled and tested. Iterations may be needed to fix issues.
